Karnataka: 5 varsities from state in top 50 ranking
Bengaluru: Five universities from the state have found place in the first 50 spots of the inaugural edition of QS India University Rankings, designed to offer an independent analysis of the performance of Indian institutions.
The rankings, which include public universities, private universities and higher education institutions (HEIs) or deemed universities, place the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) at the second spot overall, next to IIT-Bombay. The other universities from the state that feature in the top 50 are Manipal Academy of Higher Education - MAHE (Rank 26), Bangalore University – BU (Rank 37), Mangalore University – MU (Rank 43) and University of Mysore – UoM (Rank 50).
The Quacquarelli Symonds rankings are arrived at after in-depth surveys consolidated by the London-based global higher education think tank with the same name. The rankings are claimed to be the most-consulted across stakeholders from the education sector over the years. The eight indicators used to create the rankings include academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (20%), faculty-student ratio (20%), staff with a PhD (10%), papers per faculty (10%), citations per paper (5%), international faculty (2.5%) and international students (2.5%).
According to QS, the major part of the analysis is based on its global survey of academics, who are asked to identify the top-performing universities in their fields of expertise. Employee reputation is determined based the global survey of graduate employers, who are asked to identify the universities they perceive as producing best graduates. Faculty-student ratio is considered as it reflects the number of students enrolled per full-time academic faculty member employed.
IISc was also among the most-voted institutions, along with IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, voted by more than 83,000 international academics who took part in the poll. While the IISc achieved a perfect score (100 on 100) for Citations per faculty, MAHE had faculty-student ratio as its biggest strength at a score of 52.3. For BU, employer reputation was its highest scoring area at 56.1. Mangalore University scored 75.5 at the papers per faculty indicator. Mysore University scored most under the category Faculty Staff with PhD scoring 80.6.
