AIADMK-DMK workers hospitalised after fight over CM's health condition

Critical remarks on Jayalalithaa's health by the DMK member prompted a huge row, leading into an argument and fistfight.

Coimbatore: An AIADMK councillor and DMK worker have been admitted to a hospital in Pollachi in the district after they came to blows following an altercation over the remarks on the health status of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, police said on Monday.

DMK local functionary Lingadurai reportedly made critical remarks about the health condition of Jayalalithaa in an inebriated condition Sunday night. AIADMK Councillor James Raj, who was passing by, got angry over the remarks and entered into an argument leading to fistfight, police said.

Lingadurai got admitted to the Pollachi government hospital in the early hours of Monday, claiming assault by the councillor.

James also was admitted to the same hospital, complaining that Lingadurai had assaulted him, police said.

Jayalalithaa’s health has been a matter of much debate, owing to the secrecy maintained by the hospital authorities and the party leaders regarding her status, giving way to rumours and speculations.

A 70-year-old AIADMK functionary ended his life last week allegedly upset over the ailing Chief Minister’s health.

He was aggrieved on reading the news reports about the Chief Minister and consumed poison on Thursday in his house in Sholayur in Tirupur district, police said.

The Tamil Nadu police had also arrested many people across the state in a crackdown over rumour mongering on Jyaalalithaa’s health status, many of them hailing from the traditional rival party DMK, prompting senior DMK leader Stalin to cry foul.

Soon after Jayalalithaa was admitted to the Apollo Hospitals on September 22 after she complained of fever and dehydration, rumours were going on about her health on social networking sites including Facebook and WhatsApp.
