Wayanad: Probe into landslide at Banasurasagar sought

The land with arecanut and coconut trees spread across half-a-kilometre slid into the dam from the spillway.

Wayanad: The greens have demanded an investigation into the landslide that sent a 1.5-acre area crashing into the Banasurasagar dam here during the rain last month.

The land with arecanut and coconut trees spread across half-a-kilometre slid into the dam from the spillway.

A road made by the KSEB using bulldozers was partly destroyed and the remaining portion has developed cracks.

Green activist Dharmarajan Wayanad said that unbridled land development for tourism violating rules had affected the area. The land on both banks of the reservoir has been grabbed by resort owners to execute projects with the connivance of officials, he pointed out.

Many resorts are still coming up in the region unmindful of the environmental impact.

The people have demanded a probe into the landslide and the building boom in the locality.
