Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Public Service Commission is set to give Malayalam its due. There will be question papers in Malayalam along with English in all the PSC recruitment examinations soon. So far, only English question papers were available for a few exams.
The PSC has accepted the suggestion given by the state government in this regard. Chief Mini-ster Pinarayi Vijayan announced the decision after a meeting with PSC chairman M.K. Sakeer on Monday morning.
At present, PSC question papers are available in Malayalam for posts requiring qualification up to Plus-Two. This covers 90 per cent of PSC exams. Question papers are given in English only for some examinations requiring eligibility above BA. This system will change from Monday’s decision.
The state government had proposed to the PSC to provide question papers in Malayalam for all the examinations, including the recently-introduced Kerala Administrative Service (KAS), which are conducted by the commission.
The chief minister convened the meeting with the PSC following the indefinite agitation led by Aikya Malayala Prasth-anam (AMP) demanding Malayalam question papers in all exams. For the past one month, the members of AMP have been holding an indefinite agitation in front of the PSC headquarters here.
Film maker Adoor Gopa-lakrishnan, poet Sugatha-kumari and V. Madhusu-danan Nair backed the agitation. The AMP has welcomed the decision.
The chief minister said that the issue of medical, engineering and computer-based technological exams will also come up. The government will constitute a high-level committee to study it.
To solve the non-availability of scientific and technical terms in Malayalam, a technical encyclopaedia of Malayalam in various subjects will be prepared by a high-level committee.
A dictionary will be prepared for each department to provide technical terms for various topics.
The chief minister said the government will soon convene a meeting of vice-chancellors to seek their support for the planned changes.
