Kochi: Red alert sounded along Chlakkudy river banks
Kochi: With water level in the Sholayar dam reaching 2661.20 feet, the Thrissur district collector has issued a warning to the people residing on the banks of Chalakkudy river and nearby areas to remain alert. An official release said that once the water level goes above 2663 ft, the shutters of the dam will be opened and the water will flow to Peringalkuthu dam and the Chalakkudy river.
It was decided to release 100 cubic metres of water per second. The official said that the water level in the Sholayar dam was rising because 500 cusecs of water was released from the dam in Tamil Nadu. The full reservoir level of the dam in Kerala is 2663 ft.
A KSEB official said that the water level may reach 2663 ft on September 19. However, the level in the dam in Tamil Nadu was going down.
When the water is released through Peringalkuthu dam, the Chalakkudy water will rise by two feet.
An orange alert was issued when the water level crossed 2660 ft by 11 p.m. on September 13, and a yellow alert when the level reached 2658 ft. The dam is part of the Kerala Sholayar hydro-electric project.
The Chalakkudy River Protection Council said that the authorities have been turning a deaf ear to their pleas to maintain the water level in Peringalkuthu dam at 50 percent of its capacity and in Sholayar dam at 80 percent.
