Grievances Galore: SFI members protest at Tiruchy meeting

Residents of the Tamil Nadu slum clearance board art suburb Nagamangalam demanded provision of basic amenities for their flats.

TIRUCHY: Villagers of Kalpalayam and Konalai appealed to the Tiruchy district administration to divert the surplus waters and rainwater of the Pullambadi canal, Peruvalai Vaikkal, and Upparu river by pumping the quantity to the two local lakes in their villages and to solve their drinking water problem as well as irrigation for the local farmlands. They presented a petition to the district collector S.Sivarasu in this connection.

The members of the Tiruchy District Cable TV operators led by their State general secretary Veeramuthu and district president Vishnuvardhan submitted a memorandum to the Tamil Nadu Government through the district collector, urging the government to hold talks with the satellite TV managements, to ensure they reduced their charges; in turn, the cable TV operators can reduce the monthly charges to the customers. They also demanded the Government should withdraw abnormal fees of Rs 36,000 per km of the cable line.

Tension prevailed for a while as some SFI student members attempted to enter the grievances day meeting hall, but were prevented by the police. Protesting the police action, SFI activists squatted and raised slogans against police, and public exams for classes 5 and 8.
