Bengaluru: Panic gripped the residents of Ijoor in Ramanagara after a few people mistook crackers for real bombs and alerted the police, prompting an immediate action from the bomb disposal squad.

On Monday morning, a few pedestrians found a bunch of abandoned crackers on the roadside but mistook it for real bombs. Panic gripped the city as the news spread and many people gathered near the Ramgad Hotel where the crackers were found.

The local police were alerted about the explosives and within minutes a police team accompanied by a bomb disposal squad arrived at the spot. Only after a detailed inspection it was found that the explosives are nothing but regular unused crackers abandoned by revellers while taking out a Ganesha immersion procession on Sunday.

The police said that a Ganesha procession passed through the road on Sunday and members of a local Ganesha mandali burst crackers along the route. Some of the crackers did not burst and the revellers had abandoned them next to the road.

In June this year, sleuths of the National Investigating Agency (NIA) and local police recovered two live bombs near a bridge over a storm water drain in Tippu Nagar. The recovery was based on the information provided by a suspected member of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen (JMB), a Bangladesh-based terror outfit, Habibur Rehman Sheikh (28) alias Habibur or Sheikh, who was arrested by the NIA.
