Theft by youth is a social crime

Parents and teachers should counsel and speak to youngsters about the adverse effects of the crimes they are committing.

Hyderabad: Society generally judges people by their appearance and lifestyle, something that needs to change if these young criminals are to be persuaded to abandon these activities, said an official from Hyderabad police.

Parents and teachers should counsel and speak to youngsters about the adverse effects of the crimes they are committing.

It should be considered as a social crime and not as a regular offence, police said, adding that once a case is registered against a youngster, his career and future will be ruined.

“There can be several reasons, including and most often, lack of impulse and control due to underdeveloped frontal lobe, which in most is not fully developed until about the age of 24. The sheer thought and thrill of stealing something and getting it instead of having to work for it leads to crimes among the students and young adults, who are slowly exposed to drugs, alcohol, cigarette, cannabis and other bad, expensive vices. Other possible reasons might include immaturity; self-centredness, defiant personality issues with adults or people in authority, possible inherited mental health issues,” said Dr Nitika Keshri, a psychologist.
