PIL in Supreme Court for plan against drugs
Hyderabad: A petition has been moved before the Supreme Court seeking to direct the Centre to prepare an action plan to create awareness on the ill-effects of using narcotics and to take stringent action on suppliers of drugs.
The petition sought the confiscation of properties of drug peddlers and discouraging promotion and glorification of drugs in films and television shows.
The PIL moved by Telugu Yuva Shakthi president Kethireddy Jagadishwar Reddy stated that data tabled before the Rajya Sabha in July 2016 during the Monsoon Session of Parliament showed that India recorded about 10 suicides due to drug or alcohol addiction every day.
He said the apex court had issued several directions to the Centre in Bachpan Bachao Andolan v Union of India in 2016 with regard to addiction of alcohol, tobacco and narcotics.
Referring to the drug cases in Telangana state, he said the excise department was under pressure with regard to investigation. Though high profile persons were involved, they were not arrested or booked as per the law.
