Polluted water? Ducks pulled out of Korattur lake
Chennai: The 300 ducks let into Korattur lake were on Friday stopped from entering the water following fears of the lake being polluted by sewage flowing from Ambattur lake surplus canal. According to sources, sewage water from the canal entering the lake had been a long-standing problem. As a result, the PWD had created a barrier, as a temporary measure, to divert the industrial waste from Ambattur estate to the north avenue canal.
However, it is alleged that due to the heavy rains on Thursday the temporary wall had collapsed, allowing sewage water to flow into the lake. “Veterinary doctors had advised the corporation to keep the ducks away from the water, until it is confirmed the water is safe,” said a source. However, it was said, according to David, a senior entomologist from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, who had visited the city to study the lake on Tuesday, the aquatic life in the lake would not be affected as the existence of prawns in the water was a clear indication of it being pure. However, the corporation has decided to wait for report on pollution test, before letting the ducks in again.
