HYDERABAD: Nizamsagar, one of the oldest irrigation projects in the state, reached full reservoir level (FRL) on Tuesday. Against its FRL of 1405 feet, the water had reached 1404 ft and officials were letting out all the water the project was receiving.
The filling up of the reservoir early, in mid-August, has come as a big relief to the farmers spread over an area of 2.08 lakh acres which is irrigated by the dam.
Heavy rainfall in upstream areas of River Manjeera in undivided Medak district and neighbouring Karnataka and Maharashtra increased inflows into Nizamsagar which now holds a record 43 thousand million cubic feet.
It was way back in 1999 that the project had got significant inflows in August.
Kalyani and Singitham reservoirs in Kamareddy district supplemented the main canal of Nizamsagar project to cultivate agriculture lands in both Kamareddy and Nizamabad district so far. Presently, officials are releasing around 1,000 cusecs of water for third wetting of ongoing paddy cultivation.
When contacted Nizamsagar project assistant executive engineer Shiva Prasad said that water release date from Nizamsagar project is not yet finalised.
