Kozhikode: Flash flood takes away timber at Forest depot
KOZHIKODE: The Nedunkayam Govt. Timber Sales Depot, Malappuram was flooded at midnight on August 7, after the Karimpuzha river over flowed due to the floods, resulting in a huge loss to the depot, a press release said.
The depot is under the sales division of Palakkad. Timber stored in the depot was lost due to the flooding of the depot office and other buildings. It is estimated that about 500 cubic meter of timber has been lost and there is chance for the timbers getting piled up in the banks of River Chaliyar.
Depot Range Officer M. Mohandas has informed that, if the timber accumulates along the banks of any river or at any sea shore, it should be reported to the Forest Office or Police Station on 8547603874, 9447979175 or 04931 220207, as unauthorized possession, use and alteration in saw mills in the state is illegal under the Kerala Forest Act, 1961.
Due to heavy rains and floods in the Nilambur area, the Aruvakode depot was partially submerged in water and the teak and the rest of the wood that were ready for sale were swept away.
