Kottayam gets a respite from rains; hosts 20k in camps

Geologists and other experts inspected the Theekoy region on Friday and will inspect the Koottikal region on Saturday.

Kottayam: Water level in Kottayam municipality, Vaikom and the upper Kuttanad regions bordering Changanacherry has started receding even as 168 camps in the district are still functioning, hosting 20,093 people.

According to the estimates of the hydrology department, an average rainfall of 1.2 mm was recorded in the district for 24 hours till Friday morning 7 am.

District collector P.K. Sudheer Babu declared a holiday for those schools in which the relief camps are functioning in the district on Saturday.

Apart from the Kottayam municipality area the camps are functioning at the nearby panchayaths including Vijayapuram, Aymanam and Aarpookara.

The families who were evicted from their houses at the Poonjar Thekkekara, Thalanadu and Koottikal in view of the susceptibility of occurring landslides are still in the seven camps.

Geologists and other experts inspected the Theekoy region on Friday and will inspect the Koottikal region on Saturday. Meanwhile, the body of Aswathy, 27, of Thalayolaparambu near Vaikom who was drowned the other day was retrieved on Friday.
