2nd white tiger dies at Hyderabad zoo

It is being suspected that the inflammation on the right side of the sub-mandibular region below the ear was on account of a tumor.

Hyderabad: A second white tiger, Badri, died at the Hyderabad zoo on Friday while undergoing treatment for a tumour below its ear. Badri was 14 years old and born in the Tirupati zoo.

It is being suspected that the inflammation on the right side of the sub-mandibular region below the ear was on account of a tumor.

As the swelling grew, the tiger was able to eat only small pieces of chicken and beef weighing about one to 1.5 kg.

A zoo official said that on Friday, the tiger was taken into the squeeze cage for treatment and given medication but it died at 11.30 am. A postmortem revealed that multiple tumours were the possible cause of death. A tumour in the neck weighed five kg.

Body samples have been sent to the Veterinary Biological Institute, Shantinagar, and the College of Veterinary Science, Rajendranagar, as also the Laboratory for the Conservation of Endangered Species (LaCONES) and Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) for detailed investigation.
