Kerala floods: Red alert in nine districts

Heavy rainfall of 7 cm to 11 cm in 24 hours at a few places and very heavy rainfall of 12 cm to 20 cm in 24 hours.

Thiruvananthapuram: Due to the heavy rainfall, the India Meteorological Department, has kept nine districts--Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur-- in the red alert category for Friday. Orange alert has been declared in Kottayam, Alappuzha and Kollam districts. The weather update for Kasargod and Thiruvananthapuram district is yet to be made.

Heavy rainfall of 7 cm to 11 cm in 24 hours at a few places and very heavy rainfall of 12 cm to 20 cm in 24 hours at one or two places on August 17 and heavy rainfall at one or two places on August 18 in the state have also been forecast. Strong winds mainly from westerly direction with speed occasionally reaching 35 kmph to 45 kmph gusting to 60 kmph was likely along and off Karnataka coast, north Kerala coast and over Lakshadweep area for 24 hours from 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Strong winds from westerly direction with speed occasionally reaching 35 to 45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph was likely along and off south Kerala coast also during the period.

High waves in the range of 3.5 to 4.0 metres are likely till 11.30 p.m. on Friday along the coast of Lakshadweep Islands from Minicoy to Bitra, along the coast of Kerala from Vizhinjam to Kasargod and along the coast of Karnataka from Mangalore to Karwar.
