Hyderabad: A 58-year-old man sentenced for life in a murder case at Siddipet died in his sleep, reportedly due to a massive cardiac arrest at Cherlapally open-jail on Thursday morning.

The last time the convict was seen alive was at 4 am when he woke up to attend nature’s call. The Kushaiguda police have registered a case of custodial death based on a complaint from prison officials.

P. Pochaiah, 58, a native of Peddagundlavalli village in Dubbaka mandal in Siddipet district, was convicted on charges of murder in early 2015 at Siddipet and was lodged at Cherlapally Central Prison for the last three years and eight months.

Recently, three months ago, Pochaiah was shifted to the open-air jail for his good behaviour and was working in the prison’s farm.

Cherlapally open-air jail superintendent, Y. Rajesh, said, “Pochaiah was fine on Wednesday night. At around 4 am, he woke up to attend nature’s call and then went back to sleep. A few hours later, when the other prisoners woke up to take part in their routine, Pochaiah did not. Immediately, the doctors in the prison were called for his medical checkup and he was rushed to Gandhi Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Doctors said that he suffered a massive cardiac arrest in his sleep.” A case under Section 176 of CrPC was registered.”
