Hoax call threatens to blow up Delhi High Court

The police are on the lookout for the caller, who has since switched off his phone.

New Delhi: A hoax threat call to blow up the Delhi High Court left the police and security in the national capital to tizzy on Thursday.

Alert was sounded at the Delhi High Court soon after the Police Control Room (PCR) received a call from a man around 11 in the morning. The man claimed to have planted bombs inside the court complex and said it will be blown up, police said.

The bomb squad was rushed to the court soon after the call. The squad scanned the entire court premises.

The police are on the lookout for the caller, who has since switched off his phone.

The call sparked panic as it comes six years after 11 people were killed and 80 others were injured in an attack outside the Delhi High Court in September 2011.

The bomb was planted in a briefcase and ripped through a crowded reception area at the entrance of the Delhi High Court.

Back then, the incident had taken place around 10:14 am outside gate number 5 close to the reception area where visitors had lined up for entry passes.

The responsibility for that blast was taken by a terrorist group named Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI) through an e-mail in which it claimed that the act was carried out to demand repeal of death sentence to Afzal Guru, a condemned prisoner in 2001 Parliament attack.
