Doctor trying to join TN CM convoy killed in mishap

The injured were taken to a private hospital in Kelambakkam.

Chennai: A 45-year-old government doctor travelling on East Coast Road near Chennai to join the medical team in the convoy of Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, on Wednesday was killed and two others were injured when the car in which he was travelling was hit by an SUV.

Police said that Dr R. Arul Selvam, a resident of Villupuram, and working as assistant professor in Chengalpet government hospital, was to join the medical team of the convoy of the Chief Minister, who was travelling to Cuddalore to attend AIADMK founder MGR’s centenary celebration function there on Wednesday.

Arul Selvam along with his driver Prasad and assistant Pushparaj was travelling in a Ford car on ECR towards Chennai and had crossed Mahabalipuram when he noticed the CM’s convoy going towards Cuddalore from the city. “At Therkupattu village, located between the Kovalam and Mahabalipuram, the doctor saw the convoy passing and took a ‘U’ turn to follow the CM’s convoy,” police said.

As his car was taking the ‘U’ turn, a Renault Duster, came speeding and collided with doctor’s car killing him and injuring the two others. The injured were taken to a private hospital in Kelambakkam. The mishap happened around 10.45 am.
Following the incident, Vignesh, 28, a realtor, driving the other vehicle involved in the mishap, was arrested by the police.
