Chennai: Boy kidnapped from Central station rescued
Chennai: A three-year-old boy kidnapped by an unidentified man at the Central railway station on Sunday night was rescued by the police from Tiruporur.
The police also arrested the accused, a construction worker, who kidnapped the child from the railway station.
The arrested identified as Gopi Reddy( 39) a native of Odisha, was arrested when he came to Chennai Central railway station on Tuesday. He was zeroed in on by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) police based on the footages from CCTV cameras.
According to police, baby Somnath was sleeping with his parents in Central railway station on Sunday night. The couple woke up to find Somnath missing. The Railway police registered a case and checked the CCTV footage and found a man walking out of the station with the boy.
Meanwhile, on Monday morning at around 11. 30, the boy whom he kidnapped was found abandoned near the Tiruporur bus terminus. The local police took the child and informed the Childline volunteers in Chengalpatttu, who allegedly admitted the boy to an orphanage at St Thomas Mount.
On Tuesday, a police team searching for the boy was informed about the boy being admitted to the orphanage. The team went to the home and confirmed that the child was the missing boy.
Inquiries revealed that the kidnapper befriended Somnath's parents Ram Singh's wife Neelavathi hailing from Odisha on Sunday evening.
While the couple were asleep, Gopi Reddy kidnapped the boy. Police said since the CCTV footage went viral on social media, he allegedly abandoned the child at Tiruporur bus terminus.
The boy was handed over to their parents on Tuesday, police said.
