Akhil Chandran may give statement today
Thiruvananthapuram: Doctors attending to Akhil Chandran, whom SFI activists stabbed on the University College campus here on Friday, have given consent to the police officers to record his statement on Wed-nesday. The police could not speak to him so far as he suffered grievous bodily harm in the attack.
Judicial First Class Magistrate III court on Tuesday remanded five accused in the case till July 29, and the victim's statement would turn crucial in the investigation.
The remanded are first accused and SFI unit president Sivarenjith, second accused and unit secretary A. N. Nazeem, fourth accused Adwaith Manikandan, fifth accused Aadil Muhammed and sixth accused Aaromal. Another accused Ijab was remanded on Sunday. The face charges of unlawful gathering, armed insurgency, beatings, unjust detention, death threats and murder attempt. The remand report says Mr Sivaren-jith stabbed Mr Chand-ran to kill after his friend Umair Khan, a third-year Malayalam undergraduate student, singing in the canteen earlier. SFI unit members summoned him to the union room and threatened.
The accused had also insulted Mr Khan for not entering class. As girls also decided to bunk classes in protest, they began unleashing violence.
Meanwhile, police will seek legal opinion for further interrogation in the case connected with the confiscation of answer sheets from the house of Mr Shivaranjith.
The cops decided to register a case against him only after getting the legal advice because the university is also probing the whole incident.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala alleged that the government had transferred SI Binu from the Cantonment station following the raid on his home. An SI close to the CPM replaced him.
