Landslide in Valparai halts traffic for 5 hours

Elementary schools in the hills remained closed on Monday for the sixth consecutive day.

POLLACHI: Traffic on the Valparai-Pollachi road was affected since Sunday noon after a landslide in the hills near the 36th hairpin bend, following heavy rains.

The Anamalai forest in the Western Ghats has been witnessing continuous rain for the past couple of weeks. Rivers and dams in the Anamalai Tiger reserve have started to overflow, and the district administration announced a 3-day holiday for schools in Valparai last week. Elementary schools in the hills remained closed on Monday for the sixth consecutive day.

Following heavy rains, a rock along with huge trees fell down in a landslide between the 36th and 37th hairpin bends on the hill road on Sunday afternoon, affecting transport services between Pollachi and Valparai for over five hours.

An ambulance carrying a pregnant woman to the Pollachi government hospital from Valparai got stuck in the landslide. Police, the EB department, Highways and forest department rushed to the spot and joined hands in the rescue operation.
