Karwar tragedy: Deputy Commissioner S S Nakul promises all help

The couple did not have children.

Karwar: Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner S.S. Nakul has promised to send a team to look into the incident involving a paralytic man who helplessly lay on his bed near his wife's dead body for five days before they were discovered by his brother-in-law on Sunday. “We will discuss with his relatives to see if anybody is prepared to look after Anandu. If his health permits we could get him admitted to an old age home. But if not, we will look into giving him the necessary medical treatment,” he said when contacted.

Anandu Madivala of KHB colony in Karwar could not call out for help as he had suffered a stroke and was found lying semi-unconscious in bed while his wife was found dead, seated in a chair nearby. It was only after his brother -in- law opened the doors of the house with the help of the police that his wife, Girija's body, that had begun to decompose, was removed and Anandu rushed to hospital.

Mr Madivala had suffered a paralytic stroke about two years ago and the responsiblity of running the family had fallen on his wife, Girija who worked as a domestic help. The couple did not have children. Girija's brother Subramanya , who tried contacting her over the phone several times, decided to go and check on her, when he received no answer.

On Sunday when he came to the house, he found the door locked and contacted the town police, who helped him open it. On entering the house he was shocked to see his sister dead in a chair near Anandu's bed. It is believed that Girija may have died five or six days ago. Anandu himself was critical as he had not eaten or had a drink of water for nearly a week while he lay in the closed room next to the decomposing body.
