Hyderabad: An engineering student who was talking on his mobile phone on the balcony of his friend's room suffered an electric shock from an HT line passing nearby and died in Vanasthalipuram on Saturday. Police said that K. Rakesh Chandra, 19, stretched out his hands from the balcony and it came into contact with the HT cables passing by.
Rakesh Chandra belonged to Adilabad district and was studying second year mechanical engineering at CVR Engineering College in Ibrahimpatnam. He was staying in a hostel till last year. After his father Mallaiah passed away six months ago, his mother Sharada shifted to Hyderabad and both were staying at a rented room at LB Nagar. On Friday evening he came to Prashanth Nagar in Vanasthalipuram to meet his classmates.
“He was talking with us in the room when he got a call and went out to answer it,” his friend Lingaiah said.
He was talking on his mobile and was walking on the balcony on the second floor of the building. "His left hand came into contact with HT cables passing by the building and he suffered a shock," SI M. Gopal of Vanasthalipuram police station said.
His friends heard a loud noise and when they came out they found him lying on the floor with burns on his left hand and left toe. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead. Police said the gap between the building and the cable was less than two feet.
The cable was insulated with PVC pipes but there was a joint in the cable passing via the spot which was not insulated. A suspicious death case was registered by the police.
