Thiruvananthapuram: Pipe leak leads to road caving in
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Water supply to various part of the city was disrupted on Sunday following a pipe-burst in the age-old 400 mm Premo pipeline at Ambalathara in the state capital. The pipe burst happened at around 5.15 am on Sunday when a truck loaded with construction material from Tamil Nadu passed over the leaking pipeline at Ambalathara. The traffic went haywire in the region as it took several hours for the KWA to fix the broken pipe-line and restore the road.
The truck partially sank as the road caved in following the burst. According to locals, there was a minor leak in the pipeline which resulted in the caving in of the road as it was wet already. By 7 am, the KWA officials swung into action and JCB was brought in to remove the caved-in truck from the site to facilitate the work.
Water supply to various areas including Muttada, Kesavadasapuram, Ulloor, Paruthipara got disrupted. According to KWA officials, it took over five hours to fix the leak. “The water supply will come back to normal by Monday morning. We will be temporarily resurfacing the road. PWD will be fixing the road soon,” said an official. The caved-in road was tarred very recently by the PWD following a local protest. It is learnt that leaking and age-old pipelines are the main reason for the dilapidated roads in the region.
