Rain God smiles, water crisis eases in Mangaluru, Udupi

Dakshina Kannada had one of the worst water crises along with Udupi and Uttara Kannada this summer.

Mangaluru: The heavy rain of the last week has ended the water troubles of the coastal districts with the dry rivers of Dakshina Kannada district coming to life and Mangaluru giving up its water rationing.

Dakshina Kannada had one of the worst water crises along with Udupi and Uttara Kannada this summer. The dam that provides water to Udupi city went dry, Mangaluru had to ration water and Karwar supplied water through tankers. But following a week of good rain and increase in storage at the Thumbe dam, Mangaluru has ended water rationing and has resumed daily supply.

“We have stopped water rationing in the city as the water level is increasing in the dam. However as one of the transformers was hit by lightning we are not able to pump to our fullest capacity," said MCC Executive Engineer Linge Gowda.

In Udupi, although the water level in the Baje dam that provides water to the city, has not increased notably, the open wells have filled up, much to the relief of the people.

In Uttara Kannada too the storage of almost all the dams has increased, allowing more supply to the people, who had little water in the summer.

Meanwhile, as the Netravati River is now in spate, the Dharamsthala temple is preparing to once again welcome devotees.

Dharmadhikari D. Veerendra Heggade of the temple had last month requested the devotees to postpone their visit owing to the water shortage. But now that the water level has increased in the dam, Dharmasthala devotees have been told to visit it as always.
