Mysuru: The 76-year-old poor Brahmin widow , Sundramma, from the Chief Minister’s hometown, who has been struggling to buy rice under the Anna Bhagya scheme, is all smiles now as her four year wait has finally ended and she has her own ration card at last.
Seeing the report, “No rice, no Bhagya for this poor, Brahmin widow,” published in the Deccan Chronicle on June 3rd, Mysuru Deputy Commissioner, D Randeep directed the senior deputy director of the department of food and civil supplies, Dr K Rameswarappa to help the old woman. And food inspector, Ramachandra, who visited Sundramma’s house on the DD’s instructions on Thursday, verified the acknowledgement copies of her applications, Aadhaar card, voter ID and other details and handed over the ration card to her at her doorstep the same day, ending her agony.
CM Siddaramaiah’s ambitious Anna Bhagya scheme, intended to free the state of starvation, was of no help to the old woman until now. Having moved out of her daughter- in -law’s house after her son’s death, she had applied for a ration card thrice over the last four years to buy rice under the scheme, but did not get one, making it diffcult for her to have even two square meals a day. Wife of a late politician, and a mother of three, Sundramma who lives in T Narsipur, was once well off. Her fate changed after she lost her husband 12 years , her son seven years ago, and a daughter six years ago. Living on her own she makes papads for a living, but the money she gets from it is not enough to even meet her health expenses as she suffers from diabetes and other problems.
Her life has now taken a turn for the better and she couldn’t be happier. “I have at last got my ration card and I can now peacefully have two square meals a day,” she smiled.
