Hyderabad: The IITs have started an online helpdesk to cater exclusively to girls who have cracked the JEE entrance examination.
Only 38 per cent of girls who had aced one of the world’s toughest entrance examinations accepted IIT seat offers in 2016.
The IIT managements feel that girl students opt for limited choices during counselling as parents do not want them to move far from their hometowns fearing for their safety. The helpdesk will be run by IIT faculty and alumni.
IIT-Hyderabad, which ranks third among IITs in gender ratio, held an open day with girl students and parents inspecting the campus and raise questions.
Dr. Ch. Subhraman-yam, JEE Chairman, says, “We hope to continue encouraging girls to convey their views.”
