Chennai: Cab knocks down Chief Justice house compound wall

Drunk driver runs over four migrant pedestrians.

Chennai: An SUV from a call taxi firm whose driver was in an inebriated condition ran amok hitting four pedestrians before coming to a halt on crashing into the compound wall of the residence of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee of the Madras high court, on DGS Dinakaran Salai during the early hours of Friday.

The pedestrians, migrant labourers from West Bengal sustained injuries, police said.

Around 1.30 am, the four of them - Robin (28), Benjamin (28), Amit (25) and Karkaiya (20) — were walking back to their room after finishing work when the accident happened. The quartet work at a restaurant on the same road, police said.

The cab driver, M.Ayyappan (30), a native of Virudachalam, was under the influence of alcohol. His uncle, Velayutham was travelling along with him, police said.

The duo had consumed alcohol at a TASMAC outlet in Kodambakkam and were on their way to Adyar when the accident happened.

Ayyappan had told police that he failed to notice the speed breaker and drove fast which resulted in the accident. “The car rode over the sidewalk, hitting the four men and crashed into the compound wall of the CJ's official quarters,” said a police officer.

City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan and other officials visited the scene. The injured were taken to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for treatment and all four were discharged later, police said.

The Adyar Traffic Investigation wing registered cases under various sections of IPC including section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) against the driver.

He was produced at the Saidapet Magistrate courts and remanded to judicial custody.
