Now use card to pay traffic fines in Hyderabad

Presently, motorists can pay their challans at police control room cash counter, Mee seva centres or through online payment mode.

Hyderabad: To make payment of challan amounts easier for motorists, traffic cops are using the smart way of updating hand-held devices with debit and credit card swipe-payment facility.

This facility was tried earlier but was not successful as the devices could not accept all types of debit and credit cards and was withdrawn.

Traffic police said a couple of agencies had come forward to update their hand-held devices with latest security features recommended by the Reserve Bank of India for debit and credit cards.

“We (traffic police) are exploring the option of accepting payment through smart card (prepaid cash cards). We want to make sure all security parameters are updated on the hand-held machines so that any debit, credit and smart card is accepted and challan payment is made easier for motorists,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Mr Jitender.

Presently, motorists can pay their challans at police control room cash counter, Mee seva centres or through online payment mode.

A special drive would be launched by traffic cops to detain the vehicles against which more than three challans are pending, after updation of hand-held devices shortly.

Of the roughly 29 lakh challans issued in the city each year, many remain unpaid. There have been representations from the motorists to allow spot payment of challan as they were not getting time later to go to e-seva to make payments or were forgetting to remit online. As a result, pending traffic challans were piling up.

Traffic cops have stopped taking on-the-spot cash towards challan. Senior officers of traffic police have come out with the idea of on-the-spot debit, credit and smart card-wipe payment facility.
