Navy airlifts critically-ill patient

Kochi: The Southern Naval Command (SNC) in Kochi mounted an emergency airlifting of a critically ill patient from Kavaratti in Lakshadweep Island to Kochi on Thursday. The SNC received the request for an urgent medical evacuation around 10.45 from the Lakshadweep administration.

A naval Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) with medical personnel was immediately launched by the SNC from INS Garuda to evacuate the patient from Kavaratti to Kochi.

The patient identified as Mrs Cheriyabi PP, 43, a resident of Kalpeni, was critically ill, suffering from Cerebro Vascular Accident (CVA) with cerebral haemorrhage.

Admitted in the Indira Gandhi Hospital at Kavaratti she was in need of urgent medical evacuation to the mainland.

A defence spokesperson in a statement in Kochi said the Naval Liaison Team at Kavaratti provided assistance in transferring the patient, along with medical escort, to the helicopter. The patient, along with the escort, was flown to INS Garuda, Naval Base, for handing over to a medical team for further treatment at VPS Lakeshore Hospital at Ernakulam.

The Island Administration and Naval Officer in Charge (L&M), in consultation with SNC, coordinated the entire activity for the swift evacuation of the patient to the mainland.
