Hyderabad: Thanks to the crowdfunding initiative of the Gulf Telangana Welfare and Cultural Association and the Telangana government, Jaladi Venkata Swamy, who fell prey to a travel agent’s Ponzi schemes and migrated to Iraq to earn a living but met a terrible accident over there, was brought back to India and is currently being treated at NIMS hospital in Panjagutta.
The 34-year-old migrant moved to Iraq to earn money in order to clear his debt of Rs 10 lakh. He was told by travel agents that he would obtain a work visa once in Iraq, so he moved to Iraq on a visit visa. However, his visit visa expired soon and the deal stood unfulfilled as a result of which, he got stuck in the foreign land without a visa. While in Iraq, he took up odd jobs to eke out a living and was hoping to earn enough money to clear his debt back home.
Unfortunately, he met with an accident on May 22 in which he sustained severe injuries on the legs and head. However, he was denied medical care as he did not have a work visa.
His family comprises his wife, J. Nagalaxmi, and three kids Vignesh, Vardhan and Vennela — all residents of Thimmapur village, Adilabad district.
Mr Swamy told DC, “I will be eternally grateful to the Gulf Telangana Welfare and Cultural Association and the Telangana government for bringing me back safe and sound. Around the time of the incident, I was working at a poultry farm in Erbil. The hospital denied me complete treatment but Murthy from the Gulf TS Welfare and Cultural Association came to my rescue. He took me home where I received treatment and recovered.”
