School vehicles inspected
Chennai: State transport minister M.R. Vijayabaskar along with other transport officials inspected school vans and buses on Wednesday.
As many as of 129 vehicles owned by 49 educational institutions located in West and South West Chennai were inspected.
"Totally, 30,490 school vans and buses are being inspected in the state. Of Chennai's 629 buses, 428 buses have been inspected so far and 6,932 buses are inspected in Tamil Nadu of which 814 vehicles have been found unfit," said Vijayabhaskar.
The safety aspects and in school vans and procurement of fitness certificates are being checked in several parts of the city by transport, traffic police, revenue and school education departments.
The final safety audit report of the 629 vehicles in Chennai will be with the transport department for 15 days, following the schools have to fix the is-sue to get final safety report.
The government came out with TN Motor Vehicles (Regulation and Control of School Buses) Rules, 2012, after Sruthi, a six-year-old girl student, died after she slipped through a hole on the floorboard of a school vehicle.
Also, later in the evening, the transport minister took Chief Minister, Edappadi.K.Palaniswamy to have a look at two model buses that would be introduced in the city. Transport secretary, PWC Davidar was also present.
