Telangana: Students left to bear fee hike
HYDERABAD: The state government has increased the fees for certain categories of services for degree and PG colleges but will not reimburse the enhanced amount. The reimbursement scheme covers only the tuition fees, which has been left untouched. The students will have to pay the hiked fees in the ‘others’ category from their pockets.
The tuition fee was last hiked three years back, and college managements had staged protests recently demanding an increase. Following this, the government announced the increase in fee for ‘others’ on Monday.
For rural areas, the fee has been increased by Rs 5,000 and in municipal areas, Rs 7,500 was increased. The new fee hike isn’t applicable for OU, which had hiked fee for the ‘others’ category in 2016, said university registrar Gopal Reddy.
The fee hike is applicable for students Kakatiya University, Telangana University and Palamoor University. The hike should be paid at the time of admission.
Following the hike, private college managements and student unions are demanding that the government reimburse the hiked component of the fee or incorporate it into the reimbursement scheme.
Mr Venkat Chalam, converner, Telangana State Council of Higher Education, said, “The government has hiked the fees in ‘others’ category, which doesn’t get reimbursed by the government. We agree that there was a delay in fee reimbursements for the previous academic year and the funds will be released shortly.’’
