Kerala High Court moved against headscarf ban

The petition was filed by Mishad Ezhariyoor, president, MSF and two applicants of the exam.

Kochi: The Muslim Students Federation on Tuesday moved the Kerala High Court challenging the decision of All-India Institute of Medical Sciences prohibiting headgear and scarf in the medical entrance examination hall. The petition was filed by Mishad Ezhariyoor, president, MSF and two applicants of the exam.

The petitioners submitted that as per the Quranic instructions and the authentic 'hadiths', Muslim women have to cover their body except face with loose outer garments and cannot appear in public even if it is for a short duration. Headgear and scarf under the prohibited item as a condition to enter the examination hall and to write the exam is arbitrary, the petitioners said.

The prohibition is even against the mandates contained in Article 14 of the United Nations convention on the rights of the child. The applicants also sought a directive to the AIMS to permit them to enter the examination hall and write the examination wearing the dress as per their religious beliefs and practice.
