Hyderabad: Most were busy at work or were woken from sleep

The greed also plays a major role in taking them for a ride.

Hyderabad: Being highly qualified or tech savvy is no guarantee one can escape the tricks of cyber frauds.

Several professionals say they fell in the trap as they received a call from fraudsters while they were busy and had no time to think. There were other reasons too.

ACP of Cyber Crime at Cyberabad S. Jayaram says any person using credit or debit cards or doing any kind of online transactions should be aware of the fact that none of the banks will call them to ask for details of their cards.

The maximum a caller from a bank will ask is to confirm the name and address of the customer. Many a time, customers especially high profile customers like techies and professionals too fall easy prey to such fraudulent calls.”

“The call comes suddenly, and they answer the call while at work. They reveal things that they should not, he said.”

“Professionals who are in night shifts will be asleep during the day. They receive calls while asleep or are half asleep. They share details in a hurry. Sometimes it depends on their mood, stress at work etc. Home and various other factors come into picture,” ACP Jayaram said.

ACP of Cybercrimes, Hyderabad, KCS Raghuveer, said irrespective of their profession and work, customers should be cautious and should not at any cost reveal card details.

“One should cross-check the credentials of the caller or tell them that they will approach the bank and submit the details later. The best way to avoid such callers is to confront them on the first call itself,” ACP Raghuveer said.

Experts from the Society of Cyberabad Security Council said often professionals take things for granted, thinking that they are more knowledgeable than the bank staff and cannot be cheated and reveal the details. The greed also plays a major role in taking them for a ride.

“The best bait to trap techies is a call informing them that that their credit card limit has been raised. They will jump with joy and reveal all the details,” they said, adding they need be more cautious.
