Funds sought for roads, bus shelters
Chennai: State minister for local administration S.P. Velumani on Tuesday submitted a petition with the union national highways and surface transport minister Nitin Gadkari seeking funds to a tune of Rs 736.64 crore for the construction of new bus stands and improvement of bus stands in the urban local bodies of Tamil Nadu.
A press statement from Chennai corporation headquarters said that the local administration minister is now on a visit to Delhi to ensure that the central ministers are updated on the civic projects completed in Tamil Nadu using central funds. Subsequently the minister also submitted petitions to minister Gadkari and rural development minister Narendra Singh Tomar demanding funds.
The minister during his interaction with the rural development Tomar also explained about the proposal to construct 25 new bridges and road expansion to a distance of 2670 kilometers and sought funds to an estimate of '1,260 crore, the release said.
Pointing out that land is a major issue affecting the construction of new bus stands, the minister admitted that of the 124 municipalities in Tamil Nadu about a dozen municipality is yet to have a bus terminal. The minister also noted that TN being a most urbanized state had been witnessing a growing demands for public transport and bus stands and new roads.
