Tamil Nadu polls: Chennai's enthusiasm did not sustain through day
Chennai: Polling in Kolathur, Perambur and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar Assembly constituencies started with a bang on Monday morning with large number of people turning to vote but soon the numbers started falling.
With unusually pleasant weather condition in summer providing relief to Chennaiites, booths in northern parts of the city witnessed brisk voting with long queues.
As soon as the polling began at 7 am, polling stations saw a long queue of voters, particularly, senior citizens and middle aged people, who preferred to vote before the sun came out.
K. Saravanan, (70), of Janakiram Reddy Colony at Kolathur was the first person to vote at Don Bosco school at Senthil Nagar. “It was unbearably hot over the last couple of weeks. So I thought of voting early to avoid standing in a long queue under the hot sun,” he said, adding he had been voting in all the Assembly polls since 1967.
Polling began on a brisk note. The crowd swelled till noon. Later, the number reduced gradually. In Kolathur, Perambur and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, which have a substantial number of middle class households, serpentine queues were found at all the polling booths.
The Kolathur Assembly constituency recorded third highest polling percentage of 64.4 per cent following RK Nagar and Perambur segments which registered 67 per cent and 65 per cent. Thiru Vi Ka Nagar constituency recorded 63.03 per cent polling.
