Rainfall likely to continue over Chennai, parts of Tamil Nadu
Chennai: After the brief spell of rainfall that descended over Tamil Nadu on Monday, weathermen predict moderate rainfall over Chennai for the next two days.
Director of Regional Meteorological Centre, S. Balachandran had warned fishermen at the southwest Bay not to venture into the sea for the next 48 hours, as strong winds at 45-65kmph speed are likely to reach South Tamil Nadu coast.
“As squally weather is forecast, hoist local cautionary signal 3 has been issued to Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Pamban, Tuticorin, Rameswaram and Colachel ports,” he added.
Astro meteorologist S. Ramachandran said that Chennai would receive 5-6cm of rainfall on Tuesday. “Scattered and widespread rains will be witnessed between May 24 and 28 in the state,” he added.
Though Chennai received less than 1.5mm of rainfall on Monday, Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district received over 100mm rainfall. Tirucharapalli received 26mm and Coimbatore received 3mm of rainfall on Monday (till 2.30pm on Monday).
Chennai, which maintained a cloudy weather condition, took a dip with the maximum temperature recorded at 31degreeC. Weather blogger Pradeep John told DC that rainfall activity is due to the well-marked low pressure traversing parallel to Tamil Nadu coast towards North.
“Landfall, which was expected at Pamban or Nagapattinam had not happened. However, gusty winds will be expected on May 18,” he added.
The sustaining low pressure will result in good amounts of rainfall over warm northern Tamil Nadu districts, said John. Meanwhile, Chennaiites have shed their fear about the rains after the December deluge. “It was indeed nice to vote in a pleasant weather rather than suffering the scorching Agni Nakshataram heat,” said a voter, P. Vaishnavi Kumarp[.
