Devotees throng chariot festival in Kalaburagi despite restrictions

Temple committee claim the organisers were taken aback by the behaviour of the devotees

Kalaburagi: Despite the fact that COVID-19 virus has claimed three lives in Kalaburagi alone, it hardly deterred the devotees from participating in the annual chariot fest of Sri Siddeshwara organized by the Siddalingeshwara Samasthana Matha held in the district on Thursday.

The palanquin procession of the deity was held on Wednesday and the organising committee decided to hold the chariot fest on Thursday on a low- key.

It was decided that only five members of the math would attend the fest but devotees gathered anyway.

“The administrative head of the Siddeshwara Math had given it in writing that the festival would be low key and informed villagers of this through the town crier,” said a source close to the temple committee at Ravoor village.

A source close to the temple committee said the organisers were taken aback by the behaviour of the devotees.

Another said the passing away of the popular pontiff of the math, Siddalinga Mahaswamiji, a couple of months ago was one of the reasons why devotees disregarded the caution.
