Telangana high court rejects plea to stall zilla, mandal elections

The petitioner’s contention was that according to GO 81, BCs will get six zilla parishad chairman posts out of 32 in the state.

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Tuesday refused to stay the zilla and mandal elections.

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan and Justice A. Rajasheker Reddy was hearing a petition filed by TS Backward Classes Association president J. Srinivas Goud, who wanted a direction against issuing the election notification till the completion of enumeration of BC voters and providing reservations for the community in proportion to their population.

The bench said the elections could not be stopped on the grounds raised by the petitioner and upheld the order issued by the panchayat raj and rural development department providing a procedure for reservations.

Recalling the Supreme Court guideliness, which has set a 50-per cent cap on reservations, the court said it did not find any fault in the reservation of seats for the upcoming elections.

The petitioner’s contention was that according to GO 81, BCs will get six zilla parishad chairman posts out of 32 in the state. This totalled to only 18 per cent against the 34 per cent earlier.

The bench issued notices to the the officials concerned to explain their stand by filing counter affidavits in three weeks.
