Hyderabad: Bollards to check hawkers’ entry

Hawkers will not be allowed within a 50-metre radius.

Hyderabad: The GHMC has decided to begin the installation of hydraulic bollards from Wednesday as part of Charminar pedestrianisation project (CPP).

The bollards will prevent the entry of vehicles 600m from the Charimar. Hawkers will not be allowed within a 50-metre radius.

A senior GHMC official said the corporation will instal 200 bollards, including 75 hydraulic ones, on the four streets around Charminar to regulate traffic.

Vehicular traffic will be completely banned from Wednesday and eventually hawkers will be shifted to 50 metres away from the monument.

The official said the corporation had finalised tenders to instal hydraulic bollards at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore.

The first 50 metres around the iconic structure will be earmarked as a red zone according to the street vending policy to prevent hawkers.

The 600-metre zone will be eventually converted into red and amber zones for hawking until the construction of the Salarjung bridge, where hawkers will be accommodated permanently.
