Anti-Sterlite stir: Cases filed against 250 activists

THOOTHUKUDI: Cases against 250 persons have been registered for indulging in violence and creating public nuisance during the recent agitations against the private copper smelting company, Sterlite, in Thoothukudi.

According to police sources, cases have been registered on various sections of IPC for unlawful assembly, rioting, preventing public servants from discharging their duty, and indulge in violence under relevant sections of Indian penal code.

“A total of 22 cases have been registered against 250 persons,” said the Thoothukudi SIPCOT police inspector, Hariharan, under whose jurisdiction falls the private copper smelting plant. As many as 12 men who indulged in stone pelting on the Sterlite-owned vehicles and of the media persons on April 12 were remanded to judicial custody and lodged at Palayamkottai central prison.
Cases too have been registered against noted personalities like the DMDK women’s wing state secretary, Ms. Premalatha Vijayakanth, DMDK deputy general secretary, Sudhish, Thirumurugan Gandhi of ‘May 17 Movement’ and the student-turned activist, Ms. Valarmathi of Salem for violating norms while participating in the anti-Sterlite agitations in Thoothukudi.
