Bengaluru: Women in the city seem to be excited about ‘Suraksha App’, which is aimed at their safety and security. This excitement, however, is becoming an ordeal for officers manning the app at the police control room as women who have downloaded the app are raising alarm, just to ‘test’ it.A police officer, who is associated with the initiative, said that the police control room is being flooded with calls received through the app, but none of them are ‘serious’. “Women are raising the alarm just to test the app. When we call them back, the women say that they only wanted to test the app,” he said
More than 6,500 people have downloaded the app in their android and IOS phones in just five days since it was launched by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on April 10.The police are confident that the women will start using the app for right purposes as the time passes. “We understand that the people are excited. We request all women to use the app only when needed. We have already tested it and it works fine,” the officer said.
Why no woman cops in Pink Hoysala at night?
Fifty-one Pink Hoysalas were launched on April 10 for round-the-clock safety of women. The vehicles are supposed to have at least one woman constable along with other two male cops 24/7. But it is found that the late night hours are predominantly taken care of by the male cops, which question the foundation of such an initiative, as a large number of cases of violence against women, are reported to have occurred during late evening and nights.
