Coimbatore: Bank Loan drives farmer to end life

A small time farmer, Ramasamy was cultivating crops in two acres of his total six acres of farm.

Coimbatore: Unable to repay his bank loan, a 65-year-old farmer from Karamadai committed suicide by consuming pesticide. Police said Ramasamy, a farmer from Veppampallampudur, took a loan of '60 lakh from a local bank in Saravanampatty area two years ago to try greenhouse farming.

At the time of availing the loan amount in 2014, Ramasamy was told that almost 50 per cent of the amount will be subsidised by the government. However, as he was not given the subsidy as promised, Ramasamy was forced to borrow money from friends to pay the interest in bank.

A small time farmer, Ramasamy was cultivating crops in two acres of his total six acres of farm. As he met with severe loss in agriculture, despite investing a whopping amount, Ramasamy borrowed up to Rs 12 lakh from his friends at high interest rate and by pledging jewels of his family members to pay back the interest acquired on the bank loan.

A few days ago, a bank staffer visited his house and asked him to pay Rs 9 lakh to the bank immediately. Depressed over the unfortunate turn of events, Ramasamy consumed pesticide last Thursday and died without responding to treatment on Saturday.
