Students’ protests go on in Coimbatore district

Following the Pollachi sex scandal, colleges declared a holiday amid security been beefed up in that town.

COIMBATORE: Tension prevails at Pollachi following series of protests and police have lodged complaints against 2,000 persons including college students for staging protests in various parts of the district.

Following the Pollachi sex scandal, colleges declared a holiday amid security been beefed up in that town. The police contingent is led by two ADSPs and six DSPs, around 400 policemen deployed in round-the-clock vigil; however cadres belong to various political parties, public and students are staging series of protests demanding to "hang" the alleged offenders, a fair CBI probe monitored by the court and to transfer Coimbatore district SP R. Pandiyarajan for disclosing one of the victim's name to media persons, violating the Supreme court's guidelines.

The police have lodged a complaint against 1,000 including 350 women for staging a human chain protest near Gandhi statue at Pollachi on Friday evening without police permission.

Cadre and members from DMK, Congress, CPI, CPM, AIDWA, SFI, DYFI, TPDK, VCK, MDMK and many more took part in the protest.

Following the human chain, traffic on Pollachi-Coimbatore road and Pollachi-Palakkad road was affected for more than couple of hours.

Meanwhile, Congress party members of Pollachi south division staged a protest near Thiruvalluvar Thidal, putting forth the same demands.

As many as 75 Congress workers inducing four women took part and police lodged complaints against them as well under four IPC sections including 153, 143, 341 and 353. Similar protests were staged in various parts of Coimbatore and Mettupalayam.

On Friday police lodged complaint against 2,000 for staging protests without permission in connection with Pollachi sex scam.
