Tamil paper has a twist for class 10

As many as 3,609 exam centres were set up In Tamil Nadu and Puducherry this year.

CHENNAI: A majority of class 10 students who wrote the Tamil paper-1 exam on Friday found the paper very tough as many questions were unfamiliar. Over 10 lakh students from across the state appeared for the state board class 10 exams which began on Friday. As many as 3,609 exam centres were set up In Tamil Nadu and Puducherry this year.

“Questions from one-mark and two-marks sections were very tough, particularly the two-marks as most of the questions were not out of the book,” teachers said adding that it is very difficult for an average student to clear the exam.

They also alleged that the Directorate of Government Exams had scrapped the blueprint system without giving any prior notice. “The question paper standard is very good. But, the students were not prepared for it” they noted.

Another section of teachers said the students who have studied the entire book could easily score high marks. “The question paper was designed in a way to make it difficult for students to score high marks. Apart from one-mark and two-marks questions, other sections are very easy,” teachers added.

Of 8,000 students who sought exemption from the Tamil compulsory exam this year, 5,040 students alone wrote the exam in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Urdu and other languages. The Tamil Nadu Tamil Learning Act passed in 2006 has made it mandatory for all students studying in the state to write Tamil as the first language in class 10 board exams. However, the school education department is permitting students who seek exemption from Tamil language exam.

They are allowed to write exam in their own mother tongue as per the court's order. Six students including 5 private candidates were caught indulging in exam malpractices on Friday.
