Police may ban vehicles at night on Church Street

The road was being used by private and commercial vehicles as parking space.

Bengaluru: Parking of vehicles has been banned from Brigade Road junction to St Mark’s Road on Church Street over the last few days. But now, there is also discussion on banning the movement of vehicles from evening till late night on the stretch, keeping in mind the heavy movement of pedestrians.

Mr R. Hithendra, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said that on Church Street vehicles were parked on both sides of the road. “This affected the movement of pedestrians. The road was being used by private and commercial vehicles as parking space. At the time of inauguration, CM Siddaramaiah had directed the officers to ensure that pedestrians are given importance.”

Another traffic police officer said that discussions are on to ban vehicular movement too, from 5 pm to 11 pm. “There are numerous shops, hotels, pubs and restaurants and there is a high volume of people walking, especially during evenings and weekends. For now, we are planning to ban vehicle movement from evening to night. Later, it will be for the entire day during weekends,” he said.

On the parking space for owners of business establishments, he said, “Let them park inside their buildings, in the cellars or make other arrangements. Roads are meant for driving and riding and not parking. Every commercial building should have parking space. Even people who come to shop should be provided with parking space.”

He said that after TenderSure works, roads get a bit narrower and parking eats up the entire carriage space. “We are acting as per the notification issued by the city police commissioner and vehicles cannot be parked on either side. We have deployed traffic police constables and any vehicle parked will be towed away,” he said.
