Karnataka: Tougher law soon to curb cocaine, ganja menace
Bengaluru: Concerned by students peddling drugs in the city and schools and colleges becoming a fertile ground for the trade, the government has decided to amend the relevant law to plug the loopholes on possession of heroin and cocaine and ganja.
Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwar, who informed the Council on Thursday about the government’s intentions, said those involved in peddling drugs were taking advantage of the present law, which permitted possession of one kg of ganja or heroin.
The minister, who was replying to Mr V .Somanna of the BJP, revealed that the sale of ganja and cocaine in schools had risen in the recent past and some Nigerian students were involved in the trade.
The government is mulling deportation of Nigerian nationals involved in drugs cases, he said. “The police have been tracking students involved in drug peddling. And as some of them have been staying on after the expiry of their visas, educational institutions have been told to provide details of foreign students to their jurisdictional police,” the minister added, explaining that a few foreign students, who were overstaying in the country, got involved in petty crime to fund their expenses.
