GHMC's 2BHK plan hit by tender, legal rows

The State Government had announced that one lakh two-bedroom houses would be constructed in the GHMC area.

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)’s project for the construction of two-bedroom houses is ridden with problems due to poor response from contractors and court cases.

The State Government had announced that one lakh two-bedroom houses would be constructed in the GHMC area. The GHMC drew up plans for the construction of 1,08,560 homes. The State Government had set a unit cost of Rs 7 lakh for constructions beyond the GHMC area.

In GHMC area, the cost, including infrastructure, will be Rs 7.75 lakh per unit. The difference of Rs 75,000 per unit will be borne by the GHMC. The government has given administrative approval for the construction of 5,050 houses in 18 locations and another 15,519 houses in 32 locations.

The GHMC has taken up the construction in Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the project identifying the lands. The work, however, had to be stopped at some of the locations due to court cases.

Another problem being faced is the poor response to tenders for the project. The GHMC has requested the State Government to relax some conditions, in order attract contractors.
