Chennai: Tension in RGGGH as doctors, medicos protest

Road roko after trainee doc ill-treated by patient's kin.

Chennai: Doctors and medicos of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) on Thursday staged a road roko in front of the Memorial Hall after a trainee doctor was allegedly ill-treated by friends of a patient.

Vijay, a native of Tirunelveli, and a student of a private college in Melmaruvathur, was admitted to Ward No. 29, of the Hospital after allegedly being assaulted by his college administration. “A group 20 friends from Tirunelveli arrived to meet him but were prevented from entering all at once. This resulted in an altercation between the friends and house surgeon Vinodha,” said a source.

Following the exchange of a heated argument, the friends allegedly ill-treated her, which irked other doctors in the hospital. Expressing rage at the way doctors and post graduates are being ill-treated, doctors and medicos of the hospital staged a road roko disrupting traffic for three hours. Police held talks but to no vain. Dilipan (35), a native of Tirunelveli and resident of KM Garden, Kilpauk, was arrested for the same, while four others have been booked.

“The government should take stringent measures to ensure safety to doctors in hospitals. This is not the first time that they are being ill treated within the hospital,” said Dr G.R. Ravindranath of Doctors’ Association for Social Equality.

Journalist attacked
Trainee doctors attacked a journalist of a private news channel when he attempted to get interviews of relatives complaining about their dear ones who had allegedly died due to the protest staged by the medicos at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), on Thursday night.

The attack on Manikandan of News 7 attracted the ire of fellow journalists who gathered on RGGGH campus condemning the barbaric act. A dharna was staged on the hospital campus between 8 and 8.40 pm. Hospital management tendered an unconditional apology to the protesting lot besides assuring departmental action against trainee doctors who had resorted to violence.

Manikandan has preferred a complaint against the doctors stating that they attacked him besides criminally intimidating him.
